A bare PCB in the new black solder resist colour for the MFOS Sound Lab Ultimate project.

The MFOS Sound Lab ULTIMATE is simply put, one of the coolest things you will ever build with your own two hands. If you've always wanted to build your own analog electronic music synthesizer, the MFOS Sound Lab ULTIMATE may well be exactly what you've been waiting for. The MFOS Sound Lab ULTIMATE is the completely new single board mono-synth from MFOS with the sickest set of features you'll find on one PC board:

  • Three Musically Accurate VCOs (sawtooth and variable width rectangular wave forms, pulse width modulation, hard-sync, log and linear CV inputs)
  • VCOs provide plenty of tracking range. Listen to the samples below.
  • White Noise Generator
  • Active Mixer (for VCOs, noise and external input)
  • Voltage Controlled LP Filter (12db/Oct doubles as a sine wave oscillator)
  • Voltage Controlled Amplifier (log response)
  • Attack Release Envelope Generator
  • Two Low Frequency Oscillators (square, ramp, tri and sawtooth waveforms)
  • Repeat Gate Generator (doubles as another square wave LFO)
  • Sample & Hold (with variable sample rate and glide)
  • Attenuator Bank (for an infinite variety of modulation patches)
  • Patch Panel Design (provides infinitely variable combinations of sounds)
  • Sound Lab ULTIMATE "Expander" also available for added flexibility.

Check out our components section for any components you need to complete the project. If you can't find what you need then contact us as we are sure to have it in stock and simply missed listing it.

Hello, quick question does the Sound Lab Ultimate process external audio too? Thanks, Nick

Hi, I am in the process of adding my resistors to the PCB and found that R187 and R172 are very close together and the solder from each leaked to the other on the underside of the board. I have tried to create a gap but it’s been difficult and I’m worried I will burn the board. Is it necessary I create this gap or will or not affect anything. I apologize, I’m definitely a novice taking on an advanced project but this is the only issue I’ve had so far

When I solder the components together can I substitute the 1/4 input cv/gate sockets for 1/8 counterparts? Also when wiring can I place and solder the wire to any side of the resistor it does not say in the instructions if you need solder on a certain side or place it them with a certain polarity. Also is the parts kit updated to fit the updates Ray William suggested on the mfos ultimate instructions?

I have recently built the SLU and everything is working as it should. The only problem is noise/interference even when all of the mixer pots are turned down. It seems to be high frequencies coming through which might be down to wiring. I have used COAX for output wiring but issue is unchanged. Do you have any suggestions of parts of the circuit wiring that should be isolated? Thanks

Hi! My ultimate's oscillators have this weird "popping" interference sound. Muff -thread here: https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=162757 Any idea how to fix this?

I connected my Ultimate (and Experimenter) board up with incorrect polarity, (using the MFOS wall wart board) (plus 12v went to neg 12v and neg 12v went to plus 12v) neither now work. Can I assume that I have to now replace all the Tant & electrolytic caps to get it up and running again? Thanks. Bob
